Fair History and Fair Board

Fair History

The Stover Fair began as a street Fair in 1911. Stover’s first attempt at a community undertaking was under the sponsorship of the Progressive Association, an organization comprised mainly of business owners. It was a gala affair with a parade featuring elaborate floats for which prizes were given. A concert band furnished music. There were contests, games, a mule and horse show, a merry go round and ended with a fireworks display. The earlier fairs took place on Second Street in Stover where it continued (except during WWII) until 1980 when the fair was moved to the Stover Legion Park. Over the years there were livestock exhibits, home economics and flower displays, school displays  and more. The crowds arrived early for the school parade and carnival which provided amusement for both children and adults. In 1977, the fair date was moved to July for better weather. The fair is now held every third weekend in June at Stover Legion Memorial Park.  The Stover Lions Club sponsored the fair from 1942-1980. Many of the improvements in the legion Park were accomplished through the work of the Lions including the ballpark lights, scoreboard and much more. The fair is now organized by a board of directors and in 2011 celebrated the fair’s 100th anniversary. The fair has changed over the years but still upholds the tradition of wholesome family fun.
